Oh, I remember it like it was nearly seven years ago. Well, in fact, it was nearly seven years ago when I first started up this blog. I honestly didn't know what I wanted to do with this blog at first. I wasn't even sure I wanted to name it "David's Musings." I was thinking of naming it "Rants From David." I was going to do that until I figured out all my posts would not be "rants." So, I scratched that idea fairly quickly. I even contemplated naming this blog "Wisdom from an Old Guy." Aaaaaah....no. So, I just settled on the present day name of David's Musings. With the naming of the blog out of the way, I decided to make the initial post. You can read that very first post of David's Musings HERE. If you read that first post, you can see where I was really confused and just a wee bit intimidated by it all. I honestly had no idea what I was going to do with this blog. Most blogs have a niche they cover like Real Estate, Money Making, or even Scrapbooking. I never developed one particular niche for this blog. I saw no need for it. I mean, why limit yourself that way? So, I decided I would write about anything and everything. I mostly wrote about myself in the early days of this blog. I wrote about a dog attack at a cabin resort in North Alabama when I was married. I wrote about myself and my own personal struggles in life, about my first car and so on. That got old quick.
In that first month (April 2008) I had 33 posts!!! Sometimes I had as many as 3 posts in one day, incredibly enough. I was getting burned out pretty quickly. So, I decided to cool it to just one post a day. That actually was the deal for the first three months. You would have to go back to the first three months to see what I found to talk about. I started writing about anything that struck my fancy, including odd news stories. I wasn't sure which way I was going to go with this little blog. I just kept writing stuff. Little did I know I would still be writing "stuff" seven years later. But, here I am, at the very end of this blog's active life writing the last few posts. As I have stated before, I put this blog in moth balls (offline) for about six months in late 2010 to early 2011. I came close to deleting this blog. But, backed off that decision about two different times. I'm glad I didn't do that. One of the things that surprised me was people actually commenting on my posts. It pleased me that strangers would take time to stop and comment on my blog. Most were really nice and helpful for a new blogger. Others were....well, let's just say they reflected that segment of society that are called assholes. That's as polite as I can put it.
After those first three months, I tried my hand at making money. I tried Adsense and failed miserably. I might have earned $3.00 a month at most. My traffic wasn't up to par. So, that had a lot to do with it. I met some people who offered to help me make money. But, I decided it would be best if I just try and generate traffic first. Traffic eventually picked up. But, it was a long process. So, while this blog has good traffic going for it, the comments have fallen off dramatically. I attribute a lot of that to the decline of blogging in general. So, the first days of this blog were exciting, a learning process and a means to express myself. I certainly did the latter quite a bit. There will be more on this topic of the history of this blog, David's Musings, in future posts this month as we count down to the 1000th post and 7th year anniversary of this little blog.
