Tuesday's Rambling Thoughts – December 30, 2008

I admit, I don't follow the NFL as I once did. I am much more of a college football fan than I am of the pro game. In fact, I don't remember the last time I watched a pro game from start to finish. I had always been a Green Bay Packers fan when I was younger. Regardless, I couldn't help but notice that the Detroit Lions reached the plateau of ineptitude by losing their 16th game Sunday to my Green Bay Packers by the score of 31-21. 0-16. It's the first time in history of the NFL a team has gone the entire season without winning a game. Detroit is known as one of the worst franchises in the NFL. It is the graveyard of many careers, both coaches and players. But, this is season they reached new heights...or lows, however you wish to look at it. My deepest sympathies go out to the long suffering Detroit fans.

Ever wonder how all these banks got into such financial straits? Let's use the latest news from Washington Mutual (WaMu). There was an application for a mortgage loan by a mariachi singer. That's right, a mariachi singer. This individual also claimed to have a six figure income with no verification of that income. What happened? They had the singer photographed in front of the home. The result was this was all that was needed to approve his application. This is what we are paying for now. The ridiculous home loan craze that went on in the late 90s and early part of this decade was not thought to be cause for alarm by the Senate Banking Committee. Warning signals were being sent out. But, they were ignored. Now, we the taxpayer pay the price of our leaders lack of oversight.

Can someone explain to me why Caroline Kennedy all of a sudden has taken an interest in politics? For the vast majority of her life she ignored the family's power role in American politics. Now, she is asking to be appointed to fill out Hillary's remaining term as senator from NY. She has not even had a job since she was in college. Her experience consists of being a “mother, author, an education advocate” and the Kennedy name. My own feeling is that Caroline is bored. So, to relieve her boredom from her multi-million dollar estate living, she decides she wants to be a senator. It is just one more example of rich people living in a fantasy world. She seems shocked that people question her qualifications for the position. New York can do better. Um...on second thought, they did elect Hillary twice for senator. Never mind.

Finally, as 2008 winds down, I have been doing some reflection on becoming a blogger since April of this year. I've met lots of interesting people. Gotten into some controversy on some topics (Guantanamo comes to mind) and gotten some laughs on others (Embarrassing Moments). I have to say I have enjoyed my time on this blog and on my new blog, “Diary: Alone on Earth.” There are some days when I don't know what to blog about. But, whenever I just sit down in front of this computer, it just is almost like my hands develop a mind of their own. Most of the time I have no idea what I'm going to write about. But, thus far, I have not failed to find something to rant about. I enjoy doing this. It does interfere sometimes with my ordinary day life. But, those days are far and few between. I'm looking forward to 2009. What will I blog about? Probably the same as I have in 2008; my life, politics, sports, current events and whatever else strikes my fancy. I just enjoy writing. I hope you, the reader, in some small way get some measure of entertainment from my daily rants.
